Burns Intercessions PDF Print E-mail
Prayers and Liturgy
Monday, 01 February 2010 20:51

RobertBurnsThese are adapted from prayers my brother, Graeme Glover, led on 24th January this year.

Our prayers this morning are adapted from and inspired by the works of the poet Robert Burns, whose birthday is remembered tomorrow.

Let us pray:

O thou dread power, who reign’st above,

We know thou wilt us hear.

When in this place of peace and love,

we make our prayer sincere.

Forgive us Lord when we have grace-proud faces,

And three-mile prayers but half-mile graces

Let this place show love at its best

Where the lost find hope and the tired find rest.

God Was Here PDF Print E-mail
Prayers and Liturgy

God Was Here

You are here

And we praise you

Praise you that when ever love is mentioned, we can say “God did that”

Praise you that when ever hope is justified, we can say “God was here”

Praise you that when ever joy is strong, we can say “God has paid a visit”

Praise you that whenever our conscience is light, and the stain of wrong is washed bright clean

We can say “God has forgiven me, for he is kind.”

We ask hallowed father, may your name be honoured

May your kingdom come.

It’s a long way off this kingdom of yours dear Jesus

Long way off

The end of the world

Certainly longer than a fortnight

And it’s a long way off our bar coded, time boxed to-do listed existence

A long way off

And yet the miracle we ask is that Kingdom Comes Here

Comes here now

Into the world we can see

Of wooden pews and a world outside

And the rain and the hope for a better economy

And worry about the school or the doctor or the meeting next week

The kingdom come

Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name

Your Kingdome come

May it come

So that the sin we regret would be forgiven and its memory blotted out

So that the child we pray for would be given another chance

So that the day we live today would be well lived

And that you in the hurricane power of your Spirit

Would strengthen us to be like Jesus

Not just a little, not just a hint

But a lot like Jesus

This we ask in his name

AMEN

Random penance

Iona 21 I'm giving up worrying about hymns. The hymns fit and that' s the end of the matter.

I'm giving up imaging every problem is my responsibility. I can't remember causing half the problems so they can't all be mine.

I'm giving up thinking the whole ecological crisis is mine alone. I'll share my blue bin with anyone.

I'm giving up believing my pew was given to me by God for my bottom. It was given to me by God to make friends with a stranger.

I'm giving up supposing communion is going to be all that it ever was in the past. Bread is bread and that's communion enough.

Anyone else want to add to the lenten list? Feel free.

Discomfort at easy answers PDF Print E-mail
Prayers and Liturgy
Wednesday, 25 February 2009 20:04
May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.

Sick Of Church PDF Print E-mail

ChurchSick Of Church - Health Tips For Nauseous Ecclesiastics

Be sick of the Church when the cross road between

Word and world is abandoned;

When attacks are launched from safety

And the flesh wound is far away.

When divine words are embezzled

To bless gut prejudice
