Some Biblical Perspectives on Same-Sex relationships...

Biblical Perspectives On The Question

“Should the marking of same-sex civil partnerships be a matter of pastoral freedom?”[1]

Introduction

Broadly, there appear to be five answers to answering the above question:[2]

  1. No, the Bible is unequivocal in its condemnation of all same-sex relationships.  The Church cannot bless what the Bible condemns.[3]
  2. Yes, because there are different interpretations of the Bible’s view of same-sex relationships.  Where difference of interpretation is possible, difference of practice should be permitted.[4]
  3. Yes, because the Bible says nothing about permanent, faithful and stable same-sex relationships.[5] Where the scripture is silent, pastors should be permitted freedom of conscience.
  4. Yes, because although the Bible describes same-sex relationships as sinful, they should still be permitted as a pastoral accommodation in a broken world.
  5. Yes, because many same-sex relationships are evidently good.  Although the Bible does appear to condemn same-sex relationships, it is sometimes necessary to set aside certain parts of the Bible to remain true to God, who is revealed to us in the self-giving love of Jesus.[6]

Inherent in these approaches are two different understandings of the Bible.[7]

  • All scripture is inspired by God and is the supreme authority in all matters of life and faith[8] There is still a place for allowing later scriptures to interpret earlier ones, but this is dependent upon strong indications within the scriptures themselves.[9] Those who hold to this position might adopt any of the first four approaches outlined above.
  • The Bible is foundational to our understanding of God.[10] However to be true to the essence of the gospel, certain passages must be set aside.[11] Furthermore the Church must build on insights which do not arise directly from the Bible.[12] Those who hold to this position might tend to the fifth approach outlined above.

Dawkins Delusion
Thursday, 07 March 2013 14:57

I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world.”
― Richard Dawkins

“There is something infantile in the presumption that somebody else has a responsibility to give your life meaning and point… The truly adult view, by contrast, is that our life is as meaningful, as full and as wonderful as we choose to make it.”
― Richard DawkinsThe God Delusion

“Be thankful that you have a life, and forsake your vain and presumptuous desire for a second one.”
― Richard Dawkins

“Science flies you to the moon. Religion flies you into buildings.”
― Richard Dawkins

“ After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with color, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again. Isn’t it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it? This is how I answer when I am asked—as I am surprisingly often—why I bother to get up in the mornings.”
― Richard Dawkins

How Christopher Booker Works PDF Print E-mail
Climate Change
Monday, 31 May 2010 06:22

Christopher BookerI was sent this article by my climate sceptic friend.  It's a good example of how Booker weaves a self-confident self-confirming web (in a manner similar to Richard Dawkins) around relatively mundane arguments.

The jist of Booker's argument is "I don't like the theory that mammoth extinction caused climate change, and I don't like Chris Huhne's energy policy".

How does Booker do it?  How does he wave his magic wand over his adoring Telegraph-reading anti-windfarm carbon-burning Brussels-detesting fanbase?  What incantations does the wizard of planet-heating have in his spell book?

This is not abstract material, but debates that people ask me about.  This is the material that has been found out about so that folk can get a better informed answer.

Civil Partnerships Summary PDF Print E-mail
Same Sex Relationships
Tuesday, 09 April 2013 18:32

This is a summary paper that was produced around the time that the Church of Scotland was debating the blessing of civil partnerships.

“Should the blessing of same-sex partnerships be a matter of pastoral freedom?”

In this debate there are four main discussions about the Bible.

The points in the left-hand column tend to be made when advocating that the blessing of same-sex partnerships should not be permitted.  The arguments in the right-hand column tend to be made when arguing that the blessing of same-sex partnerships be a matter of pastoral freedom.  Not all advocates of a position would choose to use every argument listed here.
