Gospel According to Les Mis

May 5th 2013

Transcript is here.

The gospel is the great story of the Bible, it is the great story of the world, it is the great story of the human race which is why it shows up in all the other great stories.

The Lord of the Rings is full of the gospel (the death of Gandalf redeeming a whole community), Shawshank Redemption (salvation lies within) is full of the gospel.  Les Miserables has the same quality, it is full of the gospel.

Christian Eldership PDF Print E-mail
Theology Refresh

Kevin DeYoung on Christian Eldership.  What was most striking perhaps was his level of Biblical knowledge.

He writes that the word for elder - overseer, presbyter, shepherd - is used through the New Testament interchangeably.  The key image for him is of the shepherd:

- they have charge of the flock

- make sure they are feeding

- not biting each other

- wolves are not coming in

- they are not getting lost,

- and to find the ones who struggling and to carry them

It's God's way of caring for the flock.

Also about gentleness, patience, authority, looking out for the flock.

A key passage is Acts 20 where the terms are used interchangeably.

It is always good to remember that the elder is part of the flock first of all - the way that Jesus welcomes back the disciples - "Rejoice that your name is written in heaven"  - we always ought to be more excited that we are sheep than that we are shepherds.

The 100th Monkey PDF Print E-mail
Conferences
Monday, 26 November 2012 15:34

Told by Sally Foster-Fulton at a conference, asking the question, "Is this a true story?"

The 100th Monkey

A story about social change.

By Ken Keyes Jr.

The Japanese monkey, Macaca Fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.

In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkey liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.

An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too.

This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists. Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Public Health and Change PDF Print E-mail

Phil Hanlon at ethics conference.

The great public health advances of the Victorian era were to do with top down planning and bottom up change - the people who built the great reservoirs and the people who went round the streets making sure that the word was available.

Consensus has to happy and then there is the environment where change can happen.  Jack McConnell was able to find the courage to go for the smoking ban after a conversation with his counterpart in Ireland.

Gospel According to Polar Express PDF Print E-mail
Film
Saturday, 24 December 2011 15:34

Just finished watching Polar Express for the first time.

I am stunned at the way so much of Protestant Christianity is taken up into the Santa Myth, particularly the emphasis on the need to believe (including in things we "can't see", says Tom Hanks at one point - Dawkins would love that bit).  There is still room for a bit of Pelagianism to creep in (the anxiety over the one naughty child, in amongst  throng of righteous children).

So here we have:

North Pole = Heaven

Elves = Angels

Conductor Tom Hanks = John the Baptist

Bloke on Roof of train = possibly the Holy Spirit

Children = Apostles

Polar Express = The Church

Omniscient Benevolent Santa = God

  • Name change for Free Church College would ‘generate interest in wider evangelical church circles’
Free_Church_of_Scotland_LogoThe Free Church College should be renamed the Edinburgh Theological Seminary to generate interest within wider evangelical church circles and show Gospel-work co-operation, the Church’s General Assembly will hear next week. The College Board report believes its identity is too tied in with the denomination, and the change would make the College “a more national [...]

Rev Les IsaacThe man who started the internationally successful Street Pastors movement is to visit the Perth project as part of his first Scottish tour. The Street Pastors have become a welcome addition to the city’s night-time profile, administering assistance and understanding whenever required. • Christianity declining 50pc faster than thought as one in 10 under-25s is a Muslim
Christianity could be facing a catastrophic collapse in Britain according to official figures suggesting it is declining 50 per cent faster than previously thought. A new analysis of the 2011 census shows that a decade of mass immigration helped mask the scale of decline in Christian affiliation among the British-born population – while driving a [...]
